Adjacent to Ledgedale Recreation Area, this 80-acre woodland tract is maintained in a natural state with trails for hiking, bird watching, photography and public enjoyment of the scenery. Many of the trails follow old logging roads, since this area was logged about 1910-1920, prior to PPL ownership. The observant hiker will notice many different types of trees, with red maple, black birch and hemlock being the most common. In winter, the large stands of Hemlock are in sharp contrast to the openness of the deciduous trees. The large boulders seen along the hiking trails are evidence of the prehistoric glaciers that moved through this area. They were left as the glaciers receded. Although the rocks appear to penetrate the ground, they are usually on the surface with only sand and gravel beneath. The woods are home to a wide variety of birds and animals. Some of the major game animals which a lucky hiker may see include raccoon, red and gray fox, ruffed grouse, red and gray squirrel, white-tailed deer and black bear. Hunting, camping, picnicking and fire-building are prohibited at Ledgedale Natural Area.
